With our work schedules it is a very effective way to get information back and forth to each other rapidly without disturbing each other’s rest or home life. Please remember that our offices are in our home residence; please be mindful and respectful of our family’s in regards to calling after hours.

UNION:
The United Transportation Union (UTU) is a very proud and respected Union . We are the largest rail labor union in the nation with our headquarters located in Cleveland , Ohio . We handle over 80% of all claims and arbitraries that are submitted nation wide. We have the largest and best Protection Department in the rail industry. We have the largest and the best Legislative Department in the rail industry, UTU PAC is freely contributed to by its members; not one cent of union dues is used for campaign purposes. We are the only rail union that owns its own Insurance Department. UTU is the only rail union that owns its own Job Protection program.
AGREEMENTS:
When you become a union member you begin working under several agreements that have been negotiated by BOTH the UTU and the UPRR in GOOD FAITH in your behalf. Your protection, your health care, your vacation, your working conditions are the result of those agreements. Some are National others are very Local. You will be receiving a computer disk to explain each of those agreements.
When the UPRR fails to uphold one of those agreements then the UTU works in your behalf until the issue is settled.
When you are qualified as a Trainman, Switchman or Conductor you will begin on your first shift working under those agreements and you will receive all of the benefits that your co-workers receive as stated in those agreements including guarantees.
Agreements that we have negotiated in the past 2 years just for your behalf are the EBB and FLOW agreement and the AUXILIARY WORK AND TRAINING STATUS agreement. Both of these agreements are new and negotiated just for your behalf. It has taken UTU over 10 years to get these agreements finalized. You are the first to benefit from them; we as Union leaders are proud to have been part of those negotiations for you.
SENIORITY:
Transfer employees are 1st in order as to their hire dates. New employees are placed in order by the last 4 digits of their Social Security number. Highest number goes first.

Example: SS# 3423 goes ahead of SS# 3421 because it is the larger number. If there are any questions or complaints as to your seniority in this class ask the question NOW instead of having a fight down the road with Labor Relations. Your seniority is sacred to you and your job; PROTECT IT.
PROBATION PERIOD:
60 days after passing GCOR Test. After 60 days you are required to join a union. The only union that can represent you in a discipline case is the UTU while working as a Trainman, Switchman or Conductor. Prior to the 60 days, and prior to actually joining the Union , if you happen to get in a situation that might require the services of the UTU Local Chairman, can go to bat for you under the National Railway Labor Act.
REMEMBER! The UPRR can let you go anytime during that 60 day probation period with or without an explanation. When you screw up -and you will- the UTU is there to protect your job and seniority.
PERSONAL LEAVE DAYS:
By agreement you are allowed paid personal leave days. You must receive permission from the UPRR before you take any of these days. You can use them for any reason, Sick, Tired or Fun or if you are just Sick and Tired and want to have some Fun. PL Days are accrued as follows:

IN CASE OF ON-THE-JOB INJURY:
(1.) Immediately report your injury to your Local Chairman and the Railroad. No matter how minor YOU think the injury is.
(2.) If you are injured, DO NOT give the railroad any written, oral or recorded statement about your accident or injury WITHOUT YOUR UNION REPRESENTATIVE BEING PRESENT
(3.) File the required company injury report; note any defects on your report, such as tools, equipment or unsafe work place or conditions, Photograph if possible. Weather, Lighting. Record names of all witnesses. Keep a copy of report for your file. NOTE: DO NOT SIGN THE SECTION OF ACCIDENT REPORT THAT RELEASES YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY.
(4.) Consult your own doctor for treatment. Give your doctor a complete history of how your injury happened. Make sure that Admitting Nurse and Doctor completely understand that you are covered under the Federal Employee’s Liability Act (FELA), and NOT WORKMENS COMP!!!!!!
(5.) DO NOT ALLOW RAILROAD MANAGEMENT IN THE EXAMINING ROOM!!!! Remind the Doctor not to discuss your injury, without yours or your family’s permission. i.e.; R/R Doctor, R/R Claim Agent or R/R Officials.
(6.) It is your right to have a UTU Member present during any questioning by a Railroad Official, Do Not let them Intimidate or Harass you.
(7.) Contact UTU Designated Legal Counsel with additional questions.
INSURANCE:
New Employees are covered under the UP Hospital Association. Medical coverage starts from the 1st day of the 4th month of compensated service. Family members are covered starting the 90 day after the employees 1st compensated month, Family members are covered by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for the 1st year and after 1st year have an option to change to United Health Care or stay. New Employee notifies the insurance company of his or her dependents. Booklets are available in the Crew Room of the Eugene Yard. Take them home and look over the best plan that will work for your Family.
