1. (a) The National Legislative Director shall devote his/her efforts to
2. secure the enactment, modification, or repeal of laws in accordance
3. with the legislative policy of the organization. He/she shall handle all
4. legislative matters referred to him/her by the International President.
5. He/she shall collect and compile statistics on legislation affecting the
6. organization, which shall be included in his/her report to the
7. convention. Copies of this report shall be furnished State Legislative
8. Boards and to members on request.
9. The National Legislative Director shall handle with the proper
10. agents of the Federal Government all alleged violations of Federal law,
11. as brought to his/her attention, which involve the safety and welfare of
12. our membership covered by such law. He/she will, when authorized by
13. the International President, represent the United Transportation Union
14. and/or the International President before Federal agencies and
15. Congressional Committees, and in such other capacities as the
16. International President may direct.
17. The National Legislative Director shall keep the International
18. President advised on all bills and hearings before the Congress and
19. other Federal agencies, which affect the interest of the organization.
20. He/she shall furnish the International President copies of all bills
21. introduced to the Congress which may affect the organization, and such
22. information as will enable the International President to determine
23. legislative policy on such matters in accordance with the law of the
24. organization. He/she shall compile a voting record of the members of
25. Congress on legislation affecting the interests of labor. Such voting
26. record shall be furnished the International President, State, and District
27. of Columbia Legislative Boards, prior to each election and/or after the
28. adjournment of Congress. He/she shall submit recommendations to the
29. International President for candidates for Congress, based on voting
30. records and other information concerning each candidate. If there are
31. differences of opinion between the National Legislative Director and a
32. State or District of Columbia Legislative Board, such differences shall be
33. submitted to the International President whose decision shall be final.
34. Headquarters for the United States National Legislative Department
35. shall be maintained in Washington, D.C. The Legislative Director shall
36. remain at the Capitol during sessions of the Congress and such other
37. times as may be necessary to discharge his/her duties, unless otherwise
38. instructed by the International President. The Legislative Director may
39. employ sufficient personnel and such assistants as necessary to
40. properly conduct the business of the department, subject to the
41. approval of the International President.
42. (b) The Canadian Legislative Director shall devote his/her efforts to

44. with the legislative policy of the organization. He/she shall handle all
45. legislative matters referred to him/her by the International President.
46. He/she shall collect and compile statistics in legislation affecting the
47. organization, which shall be included in his/her report to the
48. Convention. Copies of his/her report shall be furnished Canadian and
49. Provincial Legislative Boards and to members on request.
50. The Canadian Legislative Director shall handle with the proper
51. agency of the Canadian Government alleged violations of Canadian law,
52. as brought to his/her attention, which involve the safety and welfare of
53. our membership covered by such law. He/she will, when authorized by
54. the International President, represent the United Transportation Union
55. and/or the International President before agencies and committees of
56. the government and in such other capacities as the International
57. President may direct.
58. Headquarters for the Canadian Legislative Department shall be
59. maintained in Ottawa, Ontario. The Canadian Legislative Director shall
60. remain at the Capital while Parliament is in session, and at such other
61. times as in the opinion of the International President, promotion of
62. legislative interests of the organization may require. He/she shall
63. maintain supervision over all legislative questions of Canadian
64. enactment and shall cooperate with, and assist, the officers of the
65. Provincial Legislative Boards when such action is required. He/she may
66. employ sufficient personnel and such assistants as necessary to
67. properly conduct the business of the department, subject to the
68. approval of the International President.
